The detail isn't in the image. AI would invent plausible-looking characters.

Why AI can’t fix this

When a number plate is only a few pixels wide, the letters have already been lost. An AI upscaler fills the gap with what plates usually look like, so it can produce sharp, convincing characters that are simply wrong. That’s worse than a blurry photo, because it looks trustworthy.

What to do instead

  • Find the original file. Messaging apps often shrink photos and videos.
  • Check other frames of the video, or another camera.
  • For anything serious, hand the original file to the people investigating.

What AI can't fix here

  • If the characters can't be read by eye in the original, the information isn't there to recover.
  • AI upscalers create sharp-looking text by guessing, which can show the wrong letters with confidence.
  • An AI-enhanced image is not reliable evidence.

Questions

What can I do instead?

Look for a better source: another camera angle, the original full-resolution file, or a clearer frame from the same video. For incidents, give the original file to the police or your insurer.

Try "launch a SaaS", "competitors", "content" or "blurry photo".
